UNCERTAINTY, HOW TO?
A workshop with students mapping out the domain of uncertainty. Considering that a state of instability in manifold manifestations of social life has become the norm, we will attempt to trace the ruptures of uncertainty and unearth the implications that such a search fuels. If we are now entangled in a seeming impasse, what are the artistic responses to this condition? After a brief introduction to the topic and the way contemporary exhibitions and biennials respond to the issue, we will focus on artists working with the moving image. What strategies do they employ, how do they introduce and weave into their practice notions of vulnerability, ambiguity and doubt? In which respect do works by different artists intersect, complement each other or differ and drift apart? By reference to recent examples from their practice—which will be screened during the workshop—we will discuss how artists address the issue of fragmentation of our subjectivities, the precarity of our societies and of our environment. Essayistic forms of filmmaking, the underlying fragmentation and deconstruction of language feed into the works we will be engaging with. In the last part of the workshop students who attended the previous days are welcome to present their own research interests or projects that connect in a broader sense to the topic of the workshop. The projects can be in any stage of development and in any medium ranging from video, performance, sound, photography, installation.
