Using the English language to: • Further develop relevant research, relating studio practice to ideas, materials, processes, sources, history and context. • Enlarging their understanding of the relevant current or historical discourses to their practice, its concerns and direction. • Encourage an understanding of the importance of an imaginative, risk-taking and adventurous approach to the understanding of practice, use of material processes, and the undertaking of research. • Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between critical and theory area applied to the area of interest and artwork of the student.
Students are required to present on-going work and research in English through leading seminar discussion with the peer group and on the basis of one-to-one tutorials. These student presentations should demonstrate the development of research (both ‘studio’ and ‘theory/history’) and the ability to critically reflect on the relationship between their own work and the work of others (fellow students and relevant artists).
Learning is through independent self-initiated research and studio practice, group tutorial contact and individual critiques. This is associated with independent research in library and other sources, gallery visits, museums or other showing venues.
Students are required to prepare for and make one presentation and lead discussion. Assessment is on the oral presentation and a written summary of the presentation. Regular attendance is a requirement.
Learning materials are provided through discussion between student and tutor and relate to the individual student’s research and practice development.
